Why is it always ‘queer people are projecting their identities onto characters’ and never ‘straight people are presuming that their identity is the default’?

Because one is 95% of the population and the other isn’t.

  1. there’s actually no way of knowing what percentage of the population are lgbt due to people being closeted, in denial or yet to come to terms with their sexuality for reasons such as compulsory heterosexuality and the fact that being lgbt is illegal in many countries and discrimination against lgbt people is legal in many others making lgbt people highly unlikely to be open about their sexuality in any kind of survey but many studies estimate that it’s much more than 5%
  2. lgbt people are adept at recognising themselves in art because for many people it’s a survival skill - many, many people have written on this subject, such as vito russo (i highly recommend the celluloid closet), alan sinfield and neil bartlett
  3. have you maybe thought about extracting your head from your arse

Once I had someone defend surveys and such saying “these types of surveys are completely anonymous so there’s no reason to lie, so they’re accurate” and it just illustrated to me that straight people have honest to God zero comprehension what being queer is actually fucking like.
